  188. Redistribution

  190. If you redistribute this list, or excerpt a significant number of
  191. entries from it, be sure to also pass along the original anonymous-FTP
  192. location, and request that updates be sent to my e-mail address, as
  193. specified at the top of this file. This will allow users to obtain
  194. updated versions at a later time, and will help ensure that I get the
  195. information I need to do the updating.

  197. Also, keep in mind that accessing a whois server requires a direct
  198. connection to the Internet. In general, sites that have access to the
  199. Internet via tcp/whois will also have access to the Internet via
  200. tcp/ftp, and will thus be able to obtain this file directly. Making
  201. the file available via a mail-based server is therefore largely
  202. unnecessary.

  205. Updates
  206. -------
  207. I am interested in any corrections to the above listing, and in
  208. reports of other whois servers. Please send them via e-mail to the
  209. address listed at the top of this file. Unless the maintainer of the
  210. server has already announced his whois service publicly, I will
  211. attempt to contact the postmaster or system maintainer prior to
  212. including a new entry.

  215. Scope
  216. -----
  217. Whois servers, at least by my definition, provide directory
  218. information in response to TCP queries on port 43, in a manner roughly
  219. analogous to the DDN NIC whois service described in RFC 954. I realize
  220. that many sites instead provide this directory service via the finger
  221. protocol, or accept queries by mail for directory information.
  222. Although I'd be happy to receive reports of these, the scope of this
  223. particular listing is limited to the TCP whois service.
  224.  
  225. There are a few hosts that accept tcp/whois connections, but respond
  226. with information identical to that given by a standard finger server.
  227. Since I don't consider this a directory service, I have been omitting
  228. these hosts.
  229.  
  230.  
  231. Unlisted servers
  232. ----------------
  233. I know of some other whois servers that aren't listed above (at their
  234. maintainers' requests), even though they allow access to at least a
  235. small amount of directory information. Currently, this includes
  236. eighteen in North America, four in Europe, and one in Asia. Typical
  237. reasons include: service is about to be shut down, service is still
  238. being developed and will be announced later, or another server
  239. provides the same data in a better supported manner.
  240.  
  241.  
  242. Server names
  243. ------------ 
  244. There are currently three popular naming conventions for whois
  245. servers. The most common practice is to put whois service on a host
  246. as far up as possible in the organization's domain hierarchy. For
  247. example, the highest-level domain name associated with M.I.T. is
  248. MIT.EDU, and M.I.T.'s whois service is operated on the host named
  249. mit.edu.
  250.  
  251. Another common practice is to choose 'whois' or 'wp' as the first part
  252. of the domain name ('wp' stands for "White Pages"). This would be the
  253. case if M.I.T.'s whois service were on a host named whois.mit.edu or
  254. wp.mit.edu. In these cases, the listed name is often an alias, not the
  255. host's canonical name. In selecting the name to be listed, I've given
  256. preference to aliases starting with whois or wp.
  257.  
  258. I personally prefer the first-mentioned convention, since it results
  259. in shorter command lines, and ones I believe are less confusing to
  260. beginning Internet users. In particular, the top-level host often
  261. supports organization-wide mail service, and thus the same host name
  262. can be used for whois queries and for e-mail.
  263.  
  264.  
  265. Usage
  266. -----
  267. The most common access approach involves separately querying each
  268. server of interest, via a direct tcp/whois connection. However, there
  269. are currently a number of active projects concerned with improved
  270. interfaces to these servers, either by more intelligent client
  271. software, or by standardization of the server behavior. Eventually,
  272. this should eliminate the need for end users to have the complete
  273. collection of server names; at this point, though, distributing the
  274. server list to individual Internet users is still worthwhile.

  276. The procedure for accessing the whois servers will vary depending on
  277. your host's operating system, and on what software is installed. On
  278. UNIX systems, the preferred method is
  279.  
  280.     whois -h _server_name_ _name_of_person_
  281.  
  282. If there is no whois program, sometimes it will work to type
  283.  
  284.     telnet _server_name_ 43
  285.  
  286. and then type the "name of person" on a separate line. (The usefulness
  287. of this will vary depending on the details of the telnet client
  288. implementation installed on your system.)
  289.  
  290. Alternatively, you may be able to compile a whois program yourself,
  291. starting from source code available at various anonymous FTP sites. As
  292. a start, you might try searching archie for files named 'whois.tar.Z'.
  293.  
  294. Programs named 'whois' and 'telnet' may also be available on VMS
  295. systems. Typing 'HELP WHOIS' or 'HELP TELNET' at the DCL prompt may be
  296. useful.
  297.  
  298. Whois programs may also be installed on other operating systems, or
  299. may be available for these systems via anonymous FTP. Searching archie
  300. for file names matching 'whois' (case insensitive) might be worthwhile.

  302. Also, system administrators interested in starting new whois servers
  303. will probably be able to find one or more separate source-code
  304. packages on anonymous FTP sites. In addition to checking archie, you
  305. may wish to look in the file whois-servers.source, available at the
  306. anonymous-FTP location listed at the top of this file.

  308.  
  309. Other Formats of This List
  310. --------------------------
  311. Whenever this whois-servers.list file is updated, it is automatically
  312. converted to a few other formats. One that might be of common interest
  313. is a "Summary" version that contains just the server names and
  314. locations, one per line, and a few comment lines that each begin with
  315. ';'. This version can be obtained via
  316.

  319. or from a few replication sites that can be found by doing
  320.  
  321.     whois -h sipb.mit.edu whois-list-servers
  322.  
  323. It's intended mainly for people who have a program to copy the server
  324. list occasionally (e.g., once a week) for local redistribution. If
  325. you're able to redistribute via whois (i.e., by supporting the query
  326. whois -h _your_server_name_ whois-servers), please let me know and
  327. I'll add you to the list of replication sites.

  330. Gopher Access
  331. -------------
  332. The data in this list are also available via the Internet Gopher
  333. system. Gopher clients should connect to the host sipb.mit.edu, port
  334. 70, and choose the selection "Internet whois servers". The
  335. whois-server entries accessible in the sipb.mit.edu Gopher server are
  336. automatically updated whenever this file is changed.

  338. Alternatively, one can access this same Gopher menu by connecting to a
  339. root Gopher server at the University of Minnesota and selecting
  340. "Phone Books" then "WHOIS Searches".

  343. AFS Access
  344. ----------
  345. Sites using Transarc's AFS (Andrew File System) software can access
  346. the whois-servers.list file using the AFS global name space pathname
  347.

  350. (i.e., it is in the directory project/gopher-links relative to
  351. root.cell for the sipb.mit.edu cell.)

  353.  
  354. Access Restrictions
  355. -------------------
  356. In general, these servers should only be used for isolated queries
  357. about specific individuals of interest. Typically, it is not
  358. acceptable to make an extended series of queries in an attempt to
  359. obtain large sections, or the entirety, of the directory. Such a
  360. strategy is objectionable both because of excessive consumption of
  361. server resources, and because the directory itself is usually
  362. considered proprietary. In particular, deriving lists of persons for
  363. distribution of commercial advertisements or solicitations is
  364. expressly prohibited by site policies in many cases, and could easily
  365. cause sites to curtail the current open access to their whois servers.
  366.  
  367.  
  368. Server problems
  369. ---------------
  370. Not all of the whois-server entries constitute a "supported" service
  371. within their respective domains.  Even at sites where the service is
  372. supported, there may be occasional changes in the server host name.
  373. Also, at any given time, you will probably find one or more of the
  374. servers not operational, or apparently unusable. I have not
  375. purposefully included any servers that I believe have been permanently
  376. shut down. In all cases, either I have personally seen the server
  377. provide useful information within the last few months, or else the
  378. maintainers of the server have asked me to include it anyway, while
  379. they work on resolving usage problems.

  381.  
  382. Collection
  383. ----------
  384. The list was collected primarily via an active resource-discovery
  385. approach involving polling selected Internet hosts for possible
  386. support of tcp/whois service. This was done with some attention to
  387. minimizing consumption of resources on other Internet hosts and
  388. networks. In particular, no DNS zone transfers were used to generate
  389. lists of polling candidates. Instead, a small number of host names in
  390. most second-level domains were selected, using various heuristics, and
  391. whois queries were attempted to each of these. All queries originated
  392. from hosts in the MIT.EDU domain. Also, I've been maintaining versions
  393. of this list since August 1990, and since then a number of persons
  394. have mailed me reports of new whois servers, or updates on the servers
  395. already listed here.
